Dr. Tsai received his Ph.D. from Dept. Engineering Science at Oxford University in 1990 and became a full Professor in Dept. Mechanical Engineering at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan in 1996. He was a visiting professor at the Engineering Department of Cambridge University in UK from 2003 to 2004. Currently, he is a Chair Professor of Dept. Mechanical Engineering, NCKU and the Section Chair of IEEE Tainan Section.

He has been at the forefront of research on Robust Control for more than 20 years. His research interests focus on robust control, servo control, motor design, motor control and applications of advanced control technologies using DSP. In 1999, Dr. Tsai founded the Electrical Motor Technology Research Center at National Cheng Kung University, with the specific aim of developing motor-related technologies to assist the industries in building their own expertise. He headed the Metal Industries Research & Development Center, Taiwan from 2005 to 2007.

With rich experiences and advanced insights in robust control and electric machine design, Dr. Tsai has been regularly invited to serve as the Session Chair/Session Organizer for the IEEE and several international conferences. He is a senior member of IEEE; also Fellows of IET, Chinese Institute of Automation Engineers (CIAE), and Chinese Automatic Control Society; and has served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics.

Dr. Tsai has received numerous awards for his accomplishments in research and education, including the Award for Outstanding Contributions in Science and Technology, Executive Yuan, Taiwan (2014); National Science Council Outstanding Research Fellow, Taiwan (2013); R&D 100 “Coin Type Motor” (2013); National Science Council Outstanding Research Project, Taiwan (2010, 2005); Gold Medal, iENA Nuremberg Inventor’s Trade Fair (2010); Magnetism Prize, Taiwan Association for Magnetic Technology (2008); Contribution Award of Collaboration with University and Industry of Ministry of Economic Affairs (2007); Delta K.T. Lee Technology Award, Taiwan (2006); Taiwan TECO Science and Technology Prize (2003); Excellent Engineering Professor Award of Chinese Institute of Engineers (2002); and Outstanding Research Award of National Science Council (three times: 1998, 2000 and 2002).
